The Artist

Tim Terry Jr. tist from the Gila River Indian Commmunity who did the illustrations for the book The Foundered Mule. Tim Terry Jr. was born and raised on the Gila River Indian Reservation. He is from the village of Hashan-Kehk in District 2. Tim is a very prolific artist. He works with many mediums from drawing, painting, and story telling, to jewlery making, photography, and traditional item creation. Several of his pieces are on display at the popular Wild Horse Pass Resort, and Tim has been the featured artist in books, museums, and events including; The Heard Museum, Native Peoples Magazine and more.

Tim has worked for many years as a traditional counseler, where the use of traditional spiritual practices are used for the counseling and healing of community members in need. He is married to Teresa Terry who works as a pre-school teacher on the Reservation. Together they work hard every day to improve the lives of many people.

The approach taken with the illustrations for The Foundered Mule was one of quiet reflection and meditation after each chapter. As an image formed in his mind he would draw it on a large sketch pad. In keeping with O'odham custom, the images remained simple, yet strikingly powerful and insightful. Each drawing stands on it's own, yet when put together they form the images of a calendar stick. Tim makes traditional calendar sticks and will sometimes use them in counseling to offer individuals the opportunity to reflect on what events might have led them to a particular place in life.

When not working as a counseler, Tim spends his time with his wife and his family. He often travels to conferences and makes appearances at events. You can find the latest information regarding Tim and his appearances at his website Hashen.com.
